USB/MP3/Hard drive help needed!

Postby Beetlebank » Sat Dec 17, 2011 6:00 pm

Hi All,

Excuse my ignorance in such matters, but I need music in my workshop and CD players don't last very long in there! I don't want or need an ipod thingy so was wondering if I could use a big external PC hard drive for storage and a cheap, generic MP3 player connected by USB to the HD and by headphone socket to my sound system?

Cheers, Carl.

Hey Carl

Anything's possible.....
I do/did have a couple of MStation devices, which were essentially laptop hard drives with an mp3-playing interface on them. If I can dig them out, they still work although battery life will be nonexistent

If not, what quantity of music are we talking here? There are options but it really depends on how much music (in GB) you have

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the reply - maybe we could have a chat on new year's eve whilst still sober... I've been looking online and it seems to be a problem to get an MP3 player to properly access a USB hard drive.

Plan B - could I use my old IBM ThinkPad with a serial-USB adaptor and an external HD? My music collection would be about 0.5TB using highest quality MP3 encoding.

Cheers, Carl.

Happy to have a chat - you can see/discuss the various versions of wired, wireless and HDD-based mp3 players we've had over the years! (Feel free to look up cd3o, mstation, musicpal, sonos for a potted history ;) )

As for highest-quality conversion, keep in mind you simply won't hear any change in audio quality in a workshop environment with bitrates above 128kbs. Granted, in a home environment the rules change. But in a workshop, it ain't worth it!

For the record, our music collection of 1700 albums is encoded at 192kbs or above and sits at about 100GB

Cheers, Rich.

I wanted to encode best possible MP3 in case I want to use the files at home at some point - wouldn't want to do it all again!

Cheers, Carl.

I had picked up a 1TB ext HDD from Maplin for £60 quid week or 2 back
as wanted a 1TB HDD for my Media PC.
It is a CORE brand unit.

works a treat

Seemed the best place for a 1TB hdd at the time.
