DIY Service

My '95 T4 1.9D needs a service, I've orderded the following

4 x Glow Plugs
Brake Pads
Oil Filter
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Cabin Filter

What else would you recommend doing... Not done a home service before?

Also - Any horror's I should be wary of with any of the above?

I'd suggest
1. A brake fluid flush as your putting pads on. They dont get done often, have done mine and pedal feels much better.
Get a caliper rewind tool as makes life so much simpler and helps to keep calipers free running.

2. Check/replace the Injector leak off pipes, small black cloth covered ones. couple of quid for a length.

3. Have a litre of diesel to hand to refill the fuel filter other wise it'l be a sod to start.

4. Something not on the list don't forget to get some oil :lol: :lol:

5. When did it last have a Coolant flush? what colour if is the fluid G12 is pink/purple or equivalent from GSF

Spray all latches and catches and earths/terminals with white grease, put anti sieze and copper slip etc on everything you remove or fit...

Do your wash bottle with a good winter screen wash... Also consider wiper blades...

Check all your lights/bulbs

Thought I'd do an update.

did most of what I wanted, Front Pads, All filters and oil changes.

I thought twice about the glow plug change as, as far as I know they're working, thought I'd give the cold start lever a go first!

Thanks for the advice, all was welcome and needed - fitted a new Oil drain washer..!

Only downside - I realised my Powersteering fluid was low - only topped it up couple of weeks ago, looked underneath while wheels were off and saw that the Gator? on the powersteering rack (long pole on each side of van attached to hub - Assuming its the rack) had split - so thats going to need replacing for MOT and looks a bitch of a job to do.

You made the right choice there. They are a pig to do, and really only worth doing when you have a problem. You should never need cold start advance in our climate, if you find you are using it - there may be issues elsewhere.

Unfortunately the rack boot will not cure your fluid loss.

Sounds like the power steering
What colours the fluid? Nice dark RED??

Done a fluid flush on mine its a lot less noisy at
full lock and now only does it slightly if you hold it on lock.

Not had to do a power steering rack myself

Replacing the power steering boot isn't that tricky, replacing the rack however is a chuffing nightmare.
