Non functioning speedo.

Postby Jimbo261 » Tue Aug 28, 2012 7:45 pm

Hi All,

The speedo on the Beetle's not working.

I've replaced the grease cap as the hole was round, the cable is rotating at the speedo end and if I put something in the drive hole and rotate it the speedo registers.

BUT, when it's all connected up no reading!

Any advice or solutions before I start searching for a new speedo? :?:

Thanks.

Have you got circlip on end of cable at dust cap end? Are you pushing cable fully home in speedo before screwing the outer retaining cap on?

End of the cable worn/out of square? ......or the 'female' bit of the speedo worn or 'rounded?.........

Which case either your cable or speedo head are dead! I'd try a cable first....

How did it stop working? Was it noisy or bouncy first? Has the mileometer stopped too?

Cable end looks fine, I'm thinking it must be the head.

No idea how it stopped, it wasn't working when we bought it. the previous owner said she put a suitcase in the boot and that made the speedo stop, which sounds unlikely to me.

Odo not working either.

Hi ya

If you pop the Old cable core out and put it in the speedo does it
turn by hand.

If so you might need to shorten the Cable Outer to make the inner
protrude further into speedo. IF you know what I mean.

I'm in all week doin bits on the van if you wanna pop round.
No daily as waiting for it to return from the Menders.

Are you sure the cable is still in one piece? If it's snapped in the middle, then the wheel end will appear to turn but the inside end won't move

For the time it'll take, put a jack under the car, lift the wheel off the ground and give it a spin with the speedo end removed

Cable definatly in one piece as I've already removed it from the outer cable when I cut about 3mm off the end to get more inner in the speedo. Also already on a jack to replace the grease cover.

I'm going to shorten the outer a little more tonight and when that doesn't work ( lol) I'll go see Muppet!

Thanks all.

James

After all the struggle I made an startling discovery,
it's not possible to jack the car and spin the wheel by hand fast enough to make the speedo register!

Huge thanks to Muppet for the offer of help, made the discovery when driving to his house, still, not a wasted journey as he fixed the wipers that broke on the way there!

Cheers again mate.
