At the risk of sounding a bighead I had one of those Estafettes too, a camper version ......
They were the main personel carriers for the Gendarmes for many years

The old Brit absentmindedly arrived at French customs at Paris airport and fumbled for his passport.

"You have been to France before Monsieur?", the customs officer asked sarcastically.

The ancient Brit admitted that he had been to France before.

"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready for inspection", snapped the irate official.

The Old Guy said that the last time he came to France he did not have to show his passport.

"Impossible, old man. You British always have to show your passports on arrival in France."

The old Brit gave the Frenchman a long hard look. "I assure you, young man, that when I came ashore on Sword Beach in Normandy on D-Day in 1944, there was no damned Frenchman on the beach asking for passports".
Good advice costs nothing and is worth the price.

Just think, if he hadn't had popped over back then, and Germany had won, we might all be driving German motors!!! Heaven forbid........

Are they German built motors designed by a Brit from the Royal electrical Mechanical Engineers?

History was never my strong point but there has got to be somebody on the forum who knows the truth!!

If you are eluding to Major Ivan Hurst I think you'll find he was only responsible for reorganising the workforce after the surrender of Germany in order to get there economy and exports up and running again.
Dr F. Porsche could rightly claim fame to designing the Beetle as well as helping develope Panzer tanks

The story of the old veteran reminds me of something similar that happened to a friend of mine who lived in France. He was returning from a weekend in Spain when the Gendarmes stopped him on his return into France. For some reason they gave him a hard time, one officer said to him "how long have you been in France" ... 7 Years says my friend, the officer replied "your French isn't good enough"!! My friend said he wanted to say ... neither was my Uncle's when he landed here on June 6th 1944 and now lays in a cemetary in Normandy but that didn't bother you then did it?
