Myrtle's makeover

Postby Globbits » Sat Sep 29, 2012 7:31 pm

For those who haven't met her, this is Myrtle - a mildly tweaked Caravelle, with a 1.9TD lump in the back. Nice and reliable, cruises happily at 65, giving 35mpg, but not exactly enthusiastic!

Enter one donor engine, still with car attached

US-spec Subaru SVX - 3.3litres of flat6 awesomeness

By the time this (hopefully 3-6month) project is finished, Myrtle will be re-bodykitted, with new arches and plastic liners, repainted in a deep metallic/pearlescent blue, and rocking a much more pleasant 230bhp motor

Will keep you posted as she progresses

I'm with you John - it's a cracking car and it does seem a real shame. But it's also:
    US-spec, so left-hand drive
    US-spec, so rusty underneath
In need of new brakes all round and probably a centre-diff to get it through an MOT
    Mine

If it were saveable for sensible money, someone else would have bought it - it's been for sale in Launceston since Febuary and the only person who expressed any interest in it at all was me. Besides, I'll break the rest of the car, so hopefully the bodywork, electrics and the rest of the mechanicals will keep other SVX's in better nick alive

In any case, Myrtle has spoken - she wants horses

You're going to be holding your breath for a while guys. I've got to raise about £1,500 for the conversion parts  (Hence why I'm selling her current engine - hint hint!)

Besides, Carlos has the arches to repair first, and we all know how busy he is!!!!!!

Can't wait to get her back on the road though - she's my daily driver, including lots of business trips to Oxford. It just ain't the same, toddling around in a Mk3 Goof

Bring on the shitty miles per gallon!!!!! :D

Someone would love all that glass on the Suburu- it's going to get seriously hard to get hold of before long! A great set of spares...

Good luck with the project!

Slow progress, thanks to normal life getting in the way, and needing to clear some space in the barn before I could start. But we're finally underway!

Myrtle's stripped out, and ready to hand over to Carl for the bodywork, meaning I could turn my attention to the SVX :) And thanks to Debs being away for the weekend, I've had most of a day on it today

Job #1 - get the dash out:
Image
Image

It took about 5 hours in total - 3 of those were just to get the bloody airbag out of the dash! But the end of the day brought deep joy - one dashboard removed:
Image

Tomorrow will be removing the brace bar and seeing if I can get the 2" diameter wiring loom into the engine bay!!!!

Well, I managed another half a day on project Myrtle and made some lumps of progress on both Myrtle and the donor car :)

The brace bar put up a good fight, until I realised most of the steering column was holding it in! Two bolts later and the SVX's dash was properly out
Image

Myrtle's been getting some serious attention too - she's pretty much empty now!
Image

The windscreen had to come out for derusting/spraying. But the heater system had to come out so I can play with climate control systems, and the instrument cluster is probably being replaced with the SVX cluster
Image

All the interior and glass has come out
Image

Next thing to do on Myrtle is to clean up and paint the engine and gearbox bays, so I can sound-deaden them and start on fitting up the new lump :D
